Samuel Cowan

Representing: Seaman’s Christian Friend Society

Sam has been the Belfast port missionary with the Seamen’s Christian Friend Society (SCFS) for the past 21 years.

He had the privilege of being brought up in a Christian home and has early recollections of missionaries visiting his home church. His own love for mission was deepened by attending the Bangor Worldwide Missionary Convention, and of particular significance was meeting Walter Burrell and David Knox, the SCFS workers in Cork and Belfast.

Since joining the Society, Sam has visited many ships in Belfast and other Northern Irish ports. He has met seafarers from over 70 nations and had many opportunities to share the Gospel, distribute literature and contribute to the crews’ welfare.

Sam is married to Pauline and they have two adult children and a grandson. He is also Chairman of the Mission Workers Fellowship.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the ministry of SCFS in Belfast.
